Healthy Weight for Women

Many women worry about their weight unnecessarily and often misunderstand just what a healthy weight might be. While being overweight is a health risk for females as well as men the risks are different and perhaps surprisingly there are many women who feel they are overweight when in fact they are not.

Females tend to feel more body image pressure and are often influenced by unrealistic images from the fashion world and celebrity magazines. If however we look at the body mass index method of looking at the weight for height relationship we see healthy BMI's range from 19 to 24.9. Any less and it indicates you are underweight while more than 25 indicates being overweight. BMI's of more than 30 indicate obesity, best to talk to your doctor if you find yourself in this range.

Remember the BMI method has its limitations so is only to be treated as an indication, it is not a hard and fast rule. To calculate your BMI you'll need your height and weight and the calculation is a little easier if you know these in the metric scale:

BMI = Weight in Kilos / (Height in meters x Height in meters) or

BMI = 703 x { Weight in Pounds / (Height in inches x Height in inches) }

So a woman weighing 64 kilos (or 141 pounds) at a height of 1.7m (or 67 inches) would have a BMI of 22 which puts here in the healthy range. It should be noted that BMI does not allow for body types or genetic backgrounds so is really just a general indicator of good weight for height. However being outside the healthy range does indicate you should be looking to make some improvements unless your doctor says otherwise.
